Course Overview
In today’s complex and competitive business landscape, professionals encounter numerous obstacles. A primary challenge they confront involves effectively overseeing intricate projects crucial to fulfilling their organization’s strategic objectives.
The program is designed in accordance with the PMI® A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) – Seventh Edition, provided by the Project Management Institute, Inc., 2021. It heavily incorporates fundamental standards and practice frameworks advocated by the Project Management Institute (PMI).
During the initial phase of the Advanced Project Management & Strategic Leadership program, students will develop competencies in project management and business leadership by engaging with various project types and business scenarios. They will grasp the origins of projects, how to delineate their scope, and navigate the project planning process. Students will also enhance their skills in professional communication, aligning with Canadian business practices and communication norms. Additionally, they will acquire valuable technical and analytical proficiencies through practical exercises in a lab setting or using their personal technological devices (laptop or personal computer).
In the subsequent phase of the program, students will deepen their understanding of project management by exploring the intricacies of handling project uncertainties, encompassing risk and procurement management. They will also cultivate essential soft skills necessary for effective leadership. This stage continues the trajectory of project management education by covering project execution management, monitoring, and maintaining control over all project facets during this pivotal phase. Moreover, students commence preparation for co-op opportunities through a guided course led by an instructor.
The focus of the third phase is predominantly on Agile Methodologies such as Scrum and Waterfall, alongside addressing change and project health management, ensuring a proper project closure. Soft skills are further honed through a comprehensive course titled “Everything You Need to Know to be a Project Manager.” The core principles absorbed during the initial two terms are then applied and enhanced through a capstone project simulation course.
In the fourth and final phase, students partake in a cooperative education (co-op) experience. They are equipped with the essential tools and guidance to secure a co-op position. If a student is not eligible for a co-op, an alternative option is to enroll in and broaden their knowledge through the Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) program.
